Book excerpt: "The history of Christian theology can be a daunting, even forbidding field for the novice, who sees neither the need for nor pertinence of rummaging around dusty old texts. This people-friendly volume, a full-scale reader in the history of Christian theology, offers an easy, non-threatening, occasionally humorous yet quite thorough entry into Christianity's central texts from the Apostolic Fathers to Mary Daly. It is also enlivened by dozens of cartoons by Rich Diesslin. Highly accessible introductions to five periods precede brief introductions to and texts from more than fifty key thinkers. The texts highlight perennial themes and questions in Christian tradition, especially the meaning and importance of Jesus, challenges to the institutional church, tensions of faith and reason, spirituality, and the Christian quest for social justice. The new edition, half again as large as the original, adds significant work from the Cappadocian Fathers and the Christological controversialists, the Franciscan tradition, the Radical and English reforms, and deeper coverage of twentieth-century theologians. With learning aids, research-paper suggestions and guide, and glossary" -- Publisher description.

Download or read book An Introduction to Christian Theology PDF or another Format written by Anthony Towey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has long been a need for a comprehensive but truly introductory single-authored textbook in theology. By introducing the reader to the biblical, doctrinal and contemporary dimensions of Christianity with the help of illustrated examples from selected primary texts, the book provides an excellent grounding in theology for both students of the discipline and the general reader. The work explores key 'tools' for the scientific study of theology, endeavoring both to affirm the rationale behind Christian thinking, and also to familiarize the reader with significant contrary positions. The solid foundations in biblical theology and hermeneutics given in the book will enable students to read Judeo-Christian scripture intelligently. Key testimonies regarding Jesus Christ are scrutinized and the nature of the New Testament discussed. As well as the emergence of doctrinal orthodoxy and the later disagreements which have shaped contemporary Christianity, the reader will become familiar with the dimensions of current Christian thinking in its dialogue with post-modernity. This new edition includes an additional chapter examining Spirituality, and a series of companion videos for each chapter.

This book was released on 2010-03-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from being solely an academic enterprise, the practice of theology can pique the interest of anyone who wonders about the meaning of life. Inviting readers on a journey of 'faith seeking understanding', this introduction to Christian theology - its basic concepts, confessional content, and history - emphasizes the relevance of the key convictions of Christian faith to the challenges of today's world. In the first part, this book introduces the project of Christian theology and sketches the critical context that confronts Christian thought and practice today. In a second part, it offers a survey of the key doctrinal themes of Christian theology - including revelation, the triune God, and the world as creation - identifying their biblical basis and the highlights of their historical development before giving a systematic evaluation of each theme. The third part provides an overview of Christian theology from the early church to the present.

Elisheva Mechanic begins an exploration into the question of what is theology and how do we do theology. She introduces some of the early Church Fathers and tells their stories and what contribution they made to the development of theology and the 'great tradition.' The role of faith and learning is discussed as well as the development of a living relationship with the God whose story we discover in the Biblical text and the history of Christianity that flows out of it. The transformation of life and practical action which must flow out of all of our learning and discovery is a central focus of this book. It is written to encourage reflection on the Scriptures and the contribution of God's people through history and our faith development at the same time.

Download or read book Christian Theology of Inculturation PDF or another Format written by Mariasusai Dhavamony and published by Gregorian Biblical BookShop. This book was released on 1997 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inculturationis not just a means of evangelization but belongs to the heart of the church's evangelizing mission. it is not just a way of witnessing to Christ but of accomplishing and fulfilling his work of redemption. It is the continuation in time and space of the dialogue of salvation realized by God in Christ through the Holy Spirit. The incarnational economy of salvation means that the self-communication of God, definitively given to us in the incarnatio of his Son, is the paradigm of the saving presence and action of God in history. The inculturation of the Christian faith and life in the local Church is the historical actualization of Christ's salvation in the midst of every people. Evangelization will lose much of its power and efficacy, if it does not make use of people's language, their signs and symbols; i.e. if it does not reach and influence their way of life. After a brief introduction on the idea of culture, enculturation and acculturation in social anthropology, a theology of culture, symbol and language is treated in order to lead to the central subject-matter of the Christian theology of inculturation, which is articulated in themes such as revelation and culture, redemptive incarnation as an exemplary model of inculturation, Lay people and inculturation, missionary spirituality and inculturation. The final chapters deal with inculturation in the Indian Church, the meeting of the Gospel with Asian religions, cultures and aspirations for full humanity, and AsianChristian theology
