Book excerpt: One of Ours is a novel by Willa Cather which won the 1923 Pulitzer Prize. It tells the story of the life of Claude Wheeler, a native of Nebraska around the turn of the 20th century. The son of a successful mid-western farmer and an intensely pious mother, thus guaranteed a comfortable livelihood, Claude Wheeler nonetheless views himself as a victim of his father's success and his own inexplicable malaise. One of Ours is a portrait of a peculiarly American personality: it is the story of a young man born after the American frontier has vanished, yet whose quintessentially American restlessness seeks redemption on a frontier far bloodier and more distant than that which his forefathers had already tamed.

He encounters more at university, where the modern world beyond farm life offers new thrills and challenges, only to lose them as the farm calls him back. World War I offers him even more . . . but he may crave excitement more than life itself can allow. Wanting it as much as he does can't protect him from the consequences of personal bravado in an age of killing machines.

Seeking revenge for the death of a friend ten long years ago, Major Jake Nanden has pursued his own personal demons with an almost religious fervour through life and through battle. He is a soldier so highly decorated for bravery that his fame reaches far beyond the desolate Jupiter moon, Io, where his battalion is stationed. His victories in the Jupiter Wars are hollow though, for he is a man scared of his own soul. His life seems to be a trap from which he cannot escape. His is the Replicant Company, and replicants, or clones, are despised by all. Book 2: Unknown Place, Unknown Universe Three rookie space cadets crash on an unknown planet with aliens hot on their tail! While a dissident alien scientist struggles to control time, he discovers that his wife will betray him. His favourite student discovers a way to see into the past but find himself surrounded by enemies in a complex, fragmenting culture. Meanwhile, Stone, douchebag son of Iron Cross winner Jake Nanden, a nerd and a feminist from the Space Fleet Academy crash-land on an unknown planet after falling through a worm-hole in this gripping and visionary science fiction thriller. Called Anubians by humans, the jackal-headed aliens are now revealed as Ischians but they are hiding something on this unknown planet in an unknown universe. Stone's world is shattered while he tries to escape and warn Earth of danger. Book 3: Worlds Like Dust Domes now cover Earth's big cities and soon a force field will trap Earth inside! The jackal-headed Ischians are here! When General Jake Nanden retired from the USAC, he could never have guessed that his greatest battle was still to come. Since then, he has joined a spiritual cult called the Blue Path, trying to establish communication with a few peaceful Ischians. But now his world has been torn apart; his wife and youngest son have been killed, probably his eldest too and the Los Angeles and Washington citizens sweat it out under inescapable alien domes. His son, Stone, warned him of the invasion and he joined up with Gary Enquine to form a rudimentary resistance network. Now, they must find a way to rise up and defeat the conquerors of Earth! Nanden must escape and unite the remaining human and clone forces, scattered across the Solar System. Likened to a cross between Blade Runner and Paths of Glory, you simply must read this beautifully constructed, intensely dark and powerful Science Fiction thriller Series, if you love Phillip K. Dick and Isaac Asimov. Character interview with Jake Nanden. Name (s): Jake Nanden Age: 34 Please tell us a little about yourself. I am 5'11', dark hair, short - Army cut, slightly curly. Green eyes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the British troops bound for the Black Sea in May 1854 was a young officer in the 5th Dragoon Guards, Richard Temple Godman, who sent home throughout the entire Crimea campaign many detailed letters to his family at Park Hatch in Surrey. Temple Godman went out at the start of the war, took part in the successful Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava and in other engagements, and did not return to England until June 1856, after peace had been declared. He took three very individual horses and despite all his adventures brought them back unscathed. Godman’s dispatches from the fields of war reveal his wide interests and varied experiences; they range from the pleasures of riding in a foreign landscape, smoking Turkish tobacco, and overcoming boredom by donning comic dress and hunting wild dogs, to the pain of seeing friends and horses die from battle, disease, deprivation and lack of medicines. He writes scathingly about the skein of rivalries between the Generals (‘a good many muffs among the chiefs’), inaccurate and ‘highly coloured’ newspaper reports and, while critical of medical inefficiency, regards women in hospitals as ‘a sort of fanaticism’. Yet at other times he will employ the pen of an artist in describing a scene, or wax eloquent on the idiosyncrasies of horses. He is altogether a most gallant and sensitive young cavalryman, and deservedly went on to achieve high rank after the war. Always fresh and easy to read, his letters provide an unrivalled picture of what it was really like to be in the Crimea.

Book excerpt: Audrey’s father taught her that to stay human in the modern world, she had to build a moat around herself; a moat of books and music, philosophy and dreams. A moat that makes Audrey different from the echoes: sophisticated, emotionless machines, built to resemble humans and to work for human masters. Daniel is an echo – but he’s not like the others. He feels a connection with Audrey; a feeling Daniel knows he was never designed to have, and cannot explain. And when Audrey is placed in terrible danger, he’s determined to save her. ECHO BOY is a powerful story about love, loss and what makes us truly human.

Claude Wheeler's stormy youth, his enigmatic marriage, and the final adventure which releases the baffled energy of the boy's nature, are told with almost epic simplicity. World War I offers him even more, but he may crave excitement more than life itself can allow. Wanting it as much as he does can't protect him from the consequences of personal bravado in an age of killing machines. But behind the personal drama there is an ever deepening sense of national drama, of national character, working itself our through individuals and their destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Willa Cather’s profound Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is an almost serene World War I story. One of Ours captures the inner depths of ordinary people and delves into their everyday thoughts and lives. Claude Wheeler is struggling to find direction for his life. Under his parents’ wishes, he is studying at a Christian college, but he lacks the devout, pious attitude that comes so easily to his mother. When his father expands the family farm, Claude finds himself having to leave university, return home to Nebraska, and help his parents to manage the successful land. Soon, he finds himself in a loveless marriage with even less hope for the future than before. The second half of this thought-provoking volume commences as the US joins World War I. Leaving behind everything he knows, Claude signs up to the US Army and is stationed in France. Could this be his life’s purpose? How will the turmoil of war impact a young man raised in the countryside? This 1922 masterpiece won Willa Cather a Pulitzer Prize in 1923. The remarkable story is accompanied by an introductory essay by H. L. Mencken in this brand new edition, and is not to be missed by fans of historical fiction or collectors of Cather’s work.

Book excerpt: This volume contains four great works (O Pioneers!, The Song of the Lark, My Ántonia, and One of Ours) by the author who created the first autonomous and successful women’s heroes in American literature. Willa Cather is one of America’s most treasured writers. Her childhood in the woodlands of Virginia and on the prairies of Nebraska formed the inspiration for many of her novels, and her devotion to education provided the basis for her lifetime of achievement. Many critics have stated that Cather might have won a Nobel Prize had she not been a woman in a time of gender inequality.?The time will come when she’ll be ranked above Hemingway.”?Leon Edel? The thing about Willa Cather’s landscape and figures is that not only were they born alive but remain so after six decades.” ?GuardianThe Song of the Lark (1915): ?A story of something better than suggestiveness and charm?a thing finished, sound, and noble.” ?The NationMy Ántonia (1918): ?No romantic novel ever written in America . . . is half so beautiful as My Ántonia.” ?H.
