Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open The Fisherman’s Wife and you enter the world of first-century Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee. This is the hometown of St. Peter’s wife. What was it like to be a Jewish woman married to a man who leaves home for long stretches of time to follow Jesus, a controversial preacher with mysterious powers? Through The Fisherman’s Wife you experience the unusual life of Peter’s wife vicariously. In Capernaum you meet not only impetuous Peter, but the tempestuous Zebedee brothers and other apostles, persons Jesus healed, Mary, and the Lord himself. People in the Bible spring to life as their stories are told through the eyes of St. Peter’s wife. At first she regards Jesus as a rival for her husband’s affections. As she transforms from a doubter into a fervent disciple, you are treated to a personal and unique view not only of Peter but of Jesus—his words and actions culminating in his death and rising. By the time you are finished reading, you will feel as though you know the people who walk through the Bible at the time of Jesus. From then on, hearing and reading their stories in Scripture will never be the same. Kathleen Glavich has authored numerous books on the Bible for all ages and was privileged to visit the Holy Land. From the time she was a preteen, she has loved fiction books about Bible characters. She lives in Cleveland, Ohio, and ventures out to give talks on Scripture, even as far away as Dubai.

This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Birgitta of Sweden (1303-1373, canonized 1391) was one of the most charismatic and influential female visionaries of the later Middle Ages. Altogether, she received some 700 revelations, dealing with subjects ranging from meditations on the human condition, domestic affairs in Sweden, and ecclesiastical matters in Rome, to revelations in praise of the Incarnation and devotion to the Virgin. Her Revelations, collected and ordered by her confessors, circulated widely throughout Europe and long after her death. Many eminent individuals, including Cardinal Juan Torquemada, Jean Gerson, and Martin Luther, read and commented on her writings, which influenced the spiritual lives of countless individuals. Birgitta was also the founder of a new monastic order, which still exists today. She is the patron saint of Sweden, and in 2000 was declared (with Catherine of Siena and Edith Stein) co-patroness of Europe. Birgitta's Revelations present her as a commanding and dauntless visionary who develops a contemplative mysticism that is always interwoven with social engagement and a commitment to the salvation of the world. The varied styles of her revelations are dominated by frequent juxtapositions of memorable images and allegories that illustrate her fierce and fertile imagination, her sharp powers of observation and understanding, and her passionate and receptive storytelling powers. This fourth and final volume of the translation of the Revelations of St. Birgitta of Sweden, comprises The Heavenly Emperor's Book to Kings, The Rule, and Minor Works. While the complete collection of Birgitta's books--called Liber caelestis--ends with Books VII, the eighth book, also referred to as The Heavenly Emperor's Book to Kings, was added after her death. It was compiled by Alfonso of Jaén, and is prefaced by his own treatise, titled The Hermit's Letter to Kings, which examines the ways in which revelations are tested and proven to be true visions conferred by the Holy Spirit. This volume also contains the Birgittine Rule, the Matins readings intended for the nuns, four prayers, and a collection of scattered revelations that lie on the periphery of the main corpus of texts. The translation is based on the recently completed critical edition of the Latin text and promises to be the standard English translation of the Revelations for years to come.

This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sylvie and Bruno is a novel for children by Lewis Carroll published in 1889. The work evolved from his short story "Bruno's Revenge," published in 1867 in Aunt Judy's Magazine. With its sequel, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893), it was his final work for children. The novel has two main plots; one set in the real world at the time the book was published (the Victorian era), the other in the fictional world of Fairyland. While the latter plot is a fairytale with many nonsense elements and poems, similar to Carroll's most famous children's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the story set in Victorian Britain is a social novel. The French philosopher Gilles Deleuze termed Sylvie and Bruno "a masterpiece which shows entirely new techniques compared to Alice and Through the Looking-Glass." Charles Lutwidge Dodgson better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll (1832 – 1898), was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively story has never been told before: the complete history of women's reading and the ceaseless controversies it has inspired. Belinda Jack's groundbreaking volume travels from the Cro-Magnon cave to the digital bookstores of our time, exploring what and how women of widely differing cultures have read through the ages. Jack traces a history marked by persistent efforts to prevent women from gaining literacy or reading what they wished. She also recounts the counter-efforts of those who have battled for girls' access to books and education. The book introduces frustrated female readers of many eras—Babylonian princesses who called for women's voices to be heard, rebellious nuns who wanted to share their writings with others, confidantes who challenged Reformation theologians' writings, nineteenth-century New England mill girls who risked their jobs to smuggle novels into the workplace, and women volunteers who taught literacy to women and children on convict ships bound for Australia. Today, new distinctions between male and female readers have emerged, and Jack explores such contemporary topics as burgeoning women's reading groups, differences in men and women's reading tastes, censorship of women's on-line reading in countries like Iran, the continuing struggle for girls' literacy in many poorer places, and the impact of women readers in their new status as significant movers in the world of reading.
