Joined along the way by the bumbling magician Schmendrick and the indomitable Molly Grue, the unicorn learns all about the joys and sorrows of life and love before meeting her destiny in the castle of a despondent monarch—and confronting the creature that would drive her kind to extinction.... In The Last Unicorn, renowned and beloved novelist Peter S. Beagle spins a poignant tale of love, loss, and wonder that has resonated with millions of readers around the world. “Peter S. Beagle illuminates with his own particular magic.”—Ursula K. Le Guin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resilient, strong, and unabashedly Irish, Kathryn "Fifi" McFadden has lived through some of the most tumultuous decades of American and world history. Through the years, she became a consummate storyteller, regaling her children and grandchildren with tales from her life. Fifi always said she should write a book, and now, with the help of her son Philip, she's done exactly that. Full of vivid historical detail and the wit and wisdom only Fifi can bring, The Last Unicorn takes you from her family's humble origins in Ireland, through her own innocent youth, growing up in depression era Tarrytown, New York; to her life as a struggling working mom raising five sons, and to the twilight of her years. With insightful glimpses of life on the American home front and the Pacific theater of combat during World War II, the turbulent times of the 1960s and 1970s, and the dawn of new millennium, Fifi provides an eyewitness account of these historic periods. Fifi's tales encompass all the joys and sorrows life has to offer. Taken as a whole, they paint a portrait of a remarkable woman, as well as the many lives she touched and helped shape. The Last Unicorn is not only a family history, but a tribute to Fifi and her incredible generation.

Summary Book Review The Last Unicorn by William deBuys :

Download or read book The Last Unicorn PDF or another Format written by William deBuys and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning author's quest to find and understand a creature as rare and enigmatic as any on Earth. In 1992, in a remote mountain range, a team of scientists discovered the remains of an unusual animal with exquisite long horns. It turned out to be a living species new to Western science -- a saola, the first large land mammal discovered in fifty years. Rare then and rarer now, a live saola had never been glimpsed by a Westerner in the wild when Pulitzer Prize finalist and nature writer William deBuys and conservation biologist William Robichaud set off to search for it in central Laos. Their team endured a punishing trek up and down white-water rivers and through mountainous terrain ribboned with the snare lines of armed poachers who roamed the forest, stripping it of wildlife. In the tradition of Bruce Chatwin, Colin Thubron, and Peter Matthiessen, The Last Unicorn chronicles deBuys's journey deep into one of the world's most remote places. It's a story rich with the joys and sorrows of an expedition into undiscovered country, pursuing a species as rare and elusive as the fabled unicorn. As is true with the quest for the unicorn, in the end the expedition becomes a search for something more: the essence of wildness in nature, evidence that the soul of a place can endure, and the transformative power of natural beauty.

This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Question answering (QA) systems on the Web try to provide crisp answers to information needs posed in natural language, replacing the traditional ranked list of documents. QA, posing a multitude of research challenges, has emerged as one of the most actively investigated topics in information retrieval, natural language processing, and the artificial intelligence communities today. The flip side of such diverse and active interest is that publications are highly fragmented across several venues in the above communities, making it very difficult for new entrants to the field to get a good overview of the topic. Through this book, we make an attempt towards mitigating the above problem by providing an overview of the state-of-the-art in question answering. We cover the twin paradigms of curated Web sources used in QA tasks ‒ trusted text collections like Wikipedia, and objective information distilled into large-scale knowledge bases. We discuss distinct methodologies that have been applied to solve the QA problem in both these paradigms, using instantiations of recent systems for illustration. We begin with an overview of the problem setup and evaluation, cover notable sub-topics like open-domain, multi-hop, and conversational QA in depth, and conclude with key insights and emerging topics. We believe that this resource is a valuable contribution towards a unified view on QA, helping graduate students and researchers planning to work on this topic in the near future.

This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beyond Horatio’s Philosophy: The Fantasy of Peter S. Beagle, David Stevens examines the fantasy of American writer Peter S. Beagle. He finds a consistent view of the world and an almost overpowering sense of humor, leading him to conclude that Beagle believes that love is the best thing we have and the only reason for living. His work will be read and enjoyed for generations to come, and Stevens tells you why. Beagle indulges in what Stevens terms "metaphysical speculations”: a working-out of the possibilities of the world being different than it is. He invites the reader to examine these speculations with him, and when we do, to come away from the experience as better men and women, believing in the transforming power of love and laughing at ourselves in the process. No writer could ask for more, or succeed better. Beagle would have us believe, to paraphrase Shakespeare's Hamlet, that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy. Complete with bibliography and index.
