This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long acknowledged as a classic text on strategy, Sun Tzu's The Art of War has been admired by leaders as diverse as Mao Zedong and General Norman Schwartzkopf. However, having been written two thousand years ago, the book can be somewhat daunting to the modern reader. Mark McNeilly, author of Sun Tzu and the Art of Business (OUP, 2011), which made Sun Tzu accessible to the business executive, has extracted the six concepts most applicable to modern warfare, making them easy to understand and apply to military situations. Drawing on a wealth of fascinating historical examples, McNeilly shows how these six principles might be used in wars of the future---both conventional wars and terrorist conflicts---and how they can provide insight into current affairs, such as the war on terrorism and China's increasingly important strategic and military role in the world. This updated edition reflects on all that has happened in the past ten years, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the challenge of Iran, the "Arab Spring," and the continued rise of China. Each chapter includes brand new examples to explain important concepts in The Art of War. Including the full text of The Art of War in the popular translation by Samuel Griffith, with cross-references to quotations used in the book, Sun Tzu and the Art of Modern Warfare unlocks these elusive secrets for anyone interested in strategy and warfare, whether they are professional soldiers, military history buffs, or business executives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tides of War is about two men, Lenny Dawson and Frank Billups. Lenny is a teenager and Frank is his Sunday school teacher. Unusual circumstance bring them together again during WW II flying B-17 bombers. Their trials and exploits during WWII bring both to Germany after they are shot down. They pass themselves off as German citizens and are taken into the German Luftwaffe. Both hope to return to their base in England by flying away in a German plane. While in Germany both meet German women and a love story develops for both. The Luftwaffe quickly learn that they are superb pilots and they are promoted and sent to the eastern front where they engage the Russians. Both eventually fly a plane back to England before the war ends. Dawson is reassigned with his American unit and is shot down once more over Germany near the end of the war. He is put in a German prison that the Russians later capture. He is then sent to Siberia where he makes a daring escape nearly two years after his captured. Billups’ service with the Luftwaffe is discovered by the CIA and they want to charge him with treason. Only his commanding general is able to save him. After the war they return to America and both apply and receive jobs flying commercial airliners for Global Air. However, over the Caribbean Ocean they crash land in the ocean and are set adrift. They eventually land on an island that has been a secret base for German U-boats and are received warmly by the natives. The story concludes with Dawson and Billups helping the natives develop the island as a resort.

Book excerpt: Second in an all-new WORLD OF WARCRAFT series from New York Times bestselling author Richard A. Knaak! THE AGE OF DRAGONS IS OVER. Uncertainty plagues Azeroth’s ancient guardians as they struggle to find a new purpose. This dilemma has hit Kalecgos, youngest of the former Dragon Aspects, especially hard. Having lost his great powers, how can he—or any of his kind—still make a difference in the world? The answer lies in the distant past, when savage beasts called proto-dragons ruled the skies. Through a mysterious artifact found near the heart of Northrend, Kalecgos witnesses this violent era and the shocking history of the original Aspects: Alexstrasza, Ysera, Malygos, Neltharion, and Nozdormu. In their most primitive forms, the future protectors of Azeroth must stand united against Galakrond, a bloodthirsty creature that threatens the existence of their race. But did these mere proto-dragons face such a horrific adversary alone, or did an outside force help them? Were they given the strength they would become legendary for… or did they earn it with blood? Kalecgos’s discoveries will change everything he knows about the events that led to the...DAWN OF THE ASPECTS

The Great Depression had left many people unemployed, homeless, and desperate. Roosevelt established a "New Deal," which set the country on a path to recovery. Roosevelt's administration also faced severe threats from overseas, eventually drawing the United States into World War II. In his historically long presidency, Roosevelt lead the country through an international conflict, help bring an end to the Great Depression, and launch a new era of prosperity for the United States—all while confined to a wheelchair. Follow the setbacks and achievements of FDR's presidency as he worked to rebuild the nation from within and defend it abroad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past fifty years, the Congresses and presidents of the United States have made many efforts to improve the performance of the federal government. In this book, a leading expert in public management examines the most important reform statutes passed and concludes that the problem is not too little reform but too much. Paul Light explains that Congress and the presidency have never decided whether they trust government and its employees to do their jobs well, and so they have moved back and forth over the decades between four reform philosophies: scientific management, war on waste, watchful eye, and liberation management. These four philosophies, argues Light, operate with different goals, implementation strategies, and impacts. Yet reform initiatives draw on one or another of them almost at random, often canceling out the potential benefits of a particular statute by passing a contradictory statute soon afterward. Light shows that as the public has become increasingly distrustful of government, the reform agenda has favored the war on waste and watchful eye. He analyzes the consequences of these changes for the overall performance of government and offers policy recommendations for future reform approaches.
